Easily the BEST hamburger in the WORLD!
The Hogs have had a long history and love
affair with this eclectic Windsor bar/eatery for quite some time. Ever
since JRobiHab introduced us to the place right down the street from
him, we've always made it a point to stop off at Bubis no matter what
the circumstances. Heck, even the Hens love the place. We decided to
re-visit Bubi's during our Great Midwestern Road Trip this past summer
and can happily state that it's as good as ever.
While Bubi's has quite an extensive menu
and its decked out nicely as a non-smoking multilevel bar with the whole
exposed brick and duct work thing going for it, the thing that makes
Bubi's such a Hog favorite are their Burgers. They probably have the
biggest array of Burger toppings, sizes and combinations you can
imagine. What is a common denominator in all of this is the fact that
Bubi's uses nothing but the finest meat and they use TONS of garlic. (That's
why we don't recommend eating here before a trip to Jasons :-)
The first time we ate here Caveman, Jimbo,
Angry Johnny and the rest of the gang were in town for some gaming
during a visit with JRobi. At that time, we all polished off a
half-pound burger (located in their "Bigger Burgers" section
of the menu) along with some scrumptious hand cut fries. Grilled onions,
mushrooms, bacon, grilled red peppers are just some of the options for
toppings on the burgers. The fries though are traditionally eaten with
gravy and/or vinegar, which according to JRobi is the true Canadian way
to eat fries. We totally loved this tradition.
The next time we came in we read the
story about Bubi's challenge to its diners to finish their biggest
burger on the menu. They will offer 500 CAN dollars to anyone who can
finish their biggest burger. At the time, the four pound burger,
labelled "Jake's Next Challenge" was the biggest listed.
Apparently, a business man from St. Louis had taken on the Bubi
challenge and finished the biggest burger they had on the menu at the
time, the 2 pound "Hinden" burger.
We had recalled that the 1/2-pound burger
was so awesome, we decided to move up in class and we all ordered a 1
pound burger with frites. As before, we were impressed with the quality
of meat and the presentation as we washed our Burger, fries, and gravy
down with a Walkerville Red.
By the time Angry Johnny got married, all
of the Hogs and Hens visited the great city of Windsor for an extended
weekend trip involving the matrimonial ceremonies. It was on a Thursday
night after rehearsal that the Hogs and Hens entered Bubi's. Jimbo and
Cyberhog had announced they were going after the 2 pound Hindenburger
and they were making it a competition.
Nobody, not even Jimbo or Cyberhog were
prepared for the monstrosity that came out of the kitchen. A whole round
loaf of bread was the bun which covered this wonderfully cooked 2 pound
garlic beauty. The contestants bit into their respective challenges but
it was apparent after about 25 minutes that the Hinden would be too much
for either Hog.
What blew us away was that
"Jake" had visited Bubi's in the meantime and had finished the
"Next Challenge". So Bubi's had upped the ante and to this
day, they list an 8 pound burger (YES EIGHT) for 46.95 as the burger
that is used for the 500 dollar payoff. If you are interested, Bubi's
lists all of the conditions for meeting their challenge on the inside of
the menu.
On our last visit during the Great
Midwest Road trip, we all decided to temper our respective challenges.
The girls limiting themselves to 1/3 pound burgers, while the Hogs went
after 2/3 pound beauties. All still contain tons of garlic and are made
with care. They literally will make you glad you made the effort to come
to this fabulous eatery.
