RATING THE RESORTS
This is tougher than you think. It is
tough to compare resorts because we've visited some only once and that can be misleading
depending on the time of year and the weather. So when it comes to skiing conditions,
we've decided not to comment on that when comparing the slopes. Of course everyone knows
the best conditions for powder are in Utah, but for the most part conditions at a resort
known for "good snow" can change year to year and even month to month.
Ease of arrival: Do
you have to take two flights and then take a three hour bus ride to get there? 10%
Lodging options: From
high cost houses and chalets, to low cost hostels: are there a wide variety of lodging
choice near the ski area to suit every budget and need? 15%
Mountain Layout: Does
it make sense? Is it easy to get from one side of the mountain to the other? Do you start
out on a blue run only to be "trapped" into going down a black mogul run? Do the
runs tend to "funnel" people into one run resulting in a log jam of
skiers of
differing ski abilities? 20%
Grooming: The Hogs are
flatlanders for the most part. ANY kind of snow that doesn't slush up, or freeze up is a
bonus. We HATE powder skiing. Most people who profess love for this type of skiing are
sadistic anyway. 15%
People Flow: Are there
enough high speed quads and gondolas to speed the masses up the mountain? Are there long
lines at mid mountain chair lifts? 20%
Amenities at the Mountain:
How is the quality of food? Are there enough bathrooms to be had around the mountain? How
is the après ski experience? 10%
Entertainment Options:
What is there to do besides skiing? How is the nightlife in town and is it varied enough
so that Hogs from all age groups can enjoy it? How is the restaurant scene? 10%
Each area is rated one to ten with one
being the worst, ten the best. The weighted scores are then totaled to give the mountain
its final total.
