Tropicana
Room 1457
We enjoyed our room in the Island Tower at Tropicana although the walk from
the street back to the room was really tiring one night. I was really
wishing we had paid extra for the Paradise tower in the casino. The room was
#1457 and pictures are here:

Tropicana
Room
5248 (2nd floor of Garden rooms) 5/22/01
Non-smoking
The view was overlooking the pool and the room was located on Las Vegas blvd.
as opposed to being located on Tropicana Ave. Amenities: King sized bed. I
believe lotion and soap along with plastic drinking glasses were in the room.
Also included was an ice bucket with plastic for sanitary purposes. One
table with two chairs and a balcony to get fresh air in the room. There was a
safe in the room and I think the charge was $3 per day. The room was
approximately 200 feet away from the vending machine and ice machine.
It's probably a 500 foot walk to the casino because the room is at the end of
the wing. Stairs were across from my room and it was about a 200 foot
walk to the nearest elevator. I went on a Wednesday and paid $43
including tax. The room was booked over the phone using the LA Times
Calendar Section. I will be going back to the Trop for three nights in
two weeks, so you can see I enjoy staying at this hotel. They have a
great pool (top 5), but their casino is quite small and I would not recommend
gambling here, unless you can't leave the casino for some reason. The front
desk clerk was honest and tried very hard to get the room that I had
requested, which was nice because usually the front desk clerk's at the Trop
are a pain to deal with. Index

Room 4205 (Garden) posted 6/17/01
Smoking. The room had a balcony because it is a
garden room. The room had two double beds, one table along with two
chairs. There were also two plastic chairs for sitting out on the
balcony. Soap, 4 plastic cups, ice bucket, 3 packets of Curel lotion and
a bottle of shampoo are included in the room. There was also a safe in
the room, but I think the charge is $3 per day. The distance from the
room to the casino was 50 feet and that was fantastic. The ice machine
on our floor was broken the three nights that I was there and the elevator was
broken the first two nights I was there. I had to go up a floor to get
ice because the ice machine on the floor below mine was also broken. I
was there on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night and I paid $39, $19 and $39
per night, respectively. I booked via the telephone because the offer I
received was because of the slot club I belong to. The negatives: ice
machine broken and elevator broken. Positives: close to casino, balcony,
good selection of slots considering how small the casino is, excellent pool
and good location. The view was of the MGM's valet parking area along with
some of the MGM lit up green. I would stay in this room again.

Agency: I booked the room via telephone
Amenities: The usual soap, shower cap, ice bucket, pay per view movies,
shampoo, lotion and kleenex. Two beds, two chairs, a television, 5
drinking glasses and a couple of patio chairs. View: We were on the
bottom floor of the Garden room tower 4000. There was a balcony that
overlooked the pool area. The room was very close to the pool, but
you had to take the stairs or elevator up one floor to get to the casino.
Other: The ice machine worked around noon the first day. Went back
to the machine for ice around 8pm and it didn't work (none of the ice
machines worked in our wing after 8pm that night). The next day we
go to get some ice and they still didn't work. They charged me $1
for not using the phone and I thought that was bs. Good pool
like usual. It just barely meets my recommendation this time (I've
stayed here 3 times in the past 6 months). The front desk clerks try
to tell you to come to the front desk at 3pm to get your keys, but just
keep pressing them and they will usually find you something.

Room: 850 Island Tower posted
7/26/01
Day:
Sunday Monday
Rate: $30
Recommend: Yes
Agency: Received a postcard in the mail detailing special rates on
selected weeknights. Called the 800# which was a slot club
promotions line.
Amenities: This was a little bit of an upgrade in the Island Tower.
They called it a "mini suite" but really it was just an end room
that had a but more room. There was the usual crappy cable tv
selections, but a nice TV. King bed was nice and comfortable.
Appointments were all bamboo-themed, including the ceiling mirrors.
In the "suite" part of the room, there was a coffee table and
couch. Hair dryer in the bathroom. No coffee maker, no
iron or ironing board. 2 extra pillows in the closet. There
was a safe for $3/day. The bathroom was very large. Not
"Aladdin-large", but large but usual mid-low priced hotel
standards. The tub/shower combo was a corner unit and was very
large. Tub drained well (this is a sore spot for me - can't stand it
when you stand in a few inches of water while showering) although the
water pressure was nil. Ice bucket of course, but no glass glasses.
Only disposable plastic ones, and only 2. They were really cool
though and I snagged a half dozen of them off a housekeeping cart cause
they have a cool retro Tropicana logo printed on them. Bathroom junk
included 2 little bars of soap, bottle of shampoo/cond, and bottle of
lotion. Nothing worth swiping IMO.
View: As I said, it was a corner room in the Island Tower. Instead
of having one wall that had a window, it had two at 90 degree angles.
The room was shaped like a house; three walls were normal but then a peak.
The peak was where the two windows were, one on each slant. The
south facing window looked out over the airport and Mandalay Bay off to
the right. The west-facing window looked out at Excalibur and
Luxor, with MB off to the left. If you could punch your way through
the west-facing window, you'd have had a bit of a view of NYNY.
The odd-numbered suite across the hallway would have had a much better
view from its two windows. Generally speaking, the 8th floor of the
Island Tower has better views in the odd-numbered rooms, which face
northwest. Even-numbered ones face southeast toward McCarran.
Other: The housekeeping was the major drawback. I pulled the end
table away from the wall to discover bits of trash and a large den of dust
bunnies. The bathroom was clean at first glance but I noticed lots
of hair on the floor and in the shower when I looked closer. YUCK.
Overall I found enough instances of un-cleanliness that I think it's
noteworthy. The Island Tower, while remote from the casino and the
Strip, is the better part of the Trop to be in if you want to use the
pool. The IT's elevator takes you straight down to the pool and
dumps you off in front of swim-up blackjack. I didn't much mind the
walk to the casino. And there is a small chunk of slots near the
IT's elevator too, which I played and lost on. I would recommend this room
highly, if you aren't paying an arm and a leg. The offer I got from
the slot club was for a Garden room (one night free, other night $39) and
I happily paid the $10 upgrade charge to get into the IT. Then, on
my last day there, I didn't have to be at the airport until 8 pm, so I
paid another $25 to be allowed to check out at 6 pm. This was a
wonderful deal, allowing me to visit the pool again and not have to leave
my luggage (and my laptop computer) with the Bell desk. So for 2
nights + a big chunk of the last day, I paid $94 + tax. I thought it
was worth that.
One final comment about this room. I think I got the
"upgrade" from a standard IT room because I asked to be far from
the elevators. I am a light sleeper and I hate hearing people
talking at full-volume in the hallways. So I always ask for an
end-of-the-hallway room to decrease the amount of foot traffic near me.
In this case, I am ESPECIALLY glad I did so, because the little bit
of foot traffic that there was near my room was unbearably loud.
Still all things considered, it was worth the $. Index

View: I looked right at the Excalabur and the Luxor. What a view at
night!!!!! I could also see Mandalay Bay, but the view of NYNY wasn't
good. You have to stay in this room!!! The elevator is a few steps away
and is quiet, the casino is right off the elevator. The ice and coke
machine was right there!! The room is basic and older, but I knew that
when I booked the room.
Other: The comp system has been good to me!! I am not a high roller, but
play my share. The room service is great!!!!!!!!!!!! I like staying at the
Tropicana, but every once in awhile I like to try something different. Index Tropicana

I had made reservations for one of the
cheaper motel rooms, figuring Iīd have so much extra stuff Iīd appreciate
the short haul to the room. The room (5236) was much nicer than Iīd been
expecting from what Iīve read, with a great view from the balcony to the
pool and a BOTTLE OPENER installed in the bathroom - talk about useful
things the Venetian hasnīt got. A king bed, a sitting area, a clean room,
some nice view, a tub / shower and a very short walk to car and casino,
coupled with a great hotel location - I donīt want any more from a budget
hotel. The Tropīs open spaces show plenty signs of use and wear, though,
and the water pressure left somewhat to be desired. Index

Agency: Business trip booked by my company
Amenities: The usual, nothing out of the ordinary and nothing missing that
I really needed.
View: Horrible!! I had a balcony that faced a taller part of the roof
structure and a bunch of big pipes. I could not see anything out the
window. Most jail cells probably have better views! If I were not there
on business I would have made an issue of it.
Other: Overall I was not impressed. This section of the hotel is quite
old and shows it. Very tiny 19" TV on a stand and small selection of
channels. The bathroom sink did not drain properly. The shower nozzle
was mounted way to low. No high speed internet. Did I mention the view
was terrible? Avoid this room at all costs. I can't imagine a worse view
in Vegas! I did eat the buffet one night and it was OK. Not as good as
many but then it is about $10 cheaper than the big ones.

This room sucked. Was on the end of a
hallway next to a dark
corridor of offices. It was a large room with one bed, and the rest of
the room was just big empty space. The balcony..what a joke, was a
sliding window that opened onto a ledge overlooking airconditioning
equipment and a bunch of cigarette butts. We raised all kinds of hell
with the manager, and got upgraded the next 3 nights to a Paradise
tower room on the 10th floor overlooking the strip. This turned out ok,
as we had booked several months ago and got a 45 dollar a night room
rate. There are rumors the Tropicana is going to be the next place to
close. I ask a maintenance man and I dont know if he knew for sure or
not, but he just said there were rumors and no one had been told
anything for sure yet. Well I hope that garden room they gave us is the
first one to go under the bulldozer..LOL Index

We got a pretty decent rate at the Tropicana
(5 nights, $305). Wifey and I had Room 1152 in the Island Tower (John and
Laura were in 1154). The room was nice; larger than I'm used to in a
standard room. We had a wonderful view of the parking lot and of the
airport L. Index
